Changes

Someone said that the only constant is change…and yet those who practice deep meditation have the experience of finding an unchanging reality of peace and calm. On the surface the two statements seem to contradict each other. How can there be two realities existing simultaneously? A reality of constant change and a changeless reality.
any thoughts?

I thought about this a bit– not in terms of meditation but in terms of family ties– while I was traveling with my family this past weekend It had been years since we all traveled together. My parents, husband, sister, brother-in-law and nephews together for a long weekend road trip. I must admit, the thought of us all being together again for so many days was scary. I have spent the past ten years trying to break free from the thought and behavior patterns etched into my brain while growing up, and shedding that which no longer serves me. While I have changed in many ways, and continue to change, being with family again reminds me of a deeper reality that connects me to them, and that in its very essence is timeless and unchanging because it is based in shared common experiences and memories.

I remember a philosophy class discussion that centered around the idea that a man cannot enter the same river twice. The man changes, ages, grows, and the river flows, altered by its banks, tributaries, the weather. Yet the man and the river continue. But I believe the man doesn’t change as much as he unfolds. (or folds as the case may be) What you are has always existed therefore does not change. Your experiences allow you to cultivate different aspects of your being that have always existed.
